The Politics of Changing Your Engagement Ring (like Meghan)

Of all the ways Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has inexplicably gotten people’s knickers in a twist – from wearing couture to daring to have a baby shower (so American) – it’s changing her engagement ring which may well have inspired the most snippiness.

During her first official royal engagement since giving birth to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor on May 6 (an appearance at the Trooping the Colour parade), and while still technically on maternity leave, Meghan debuted what appeared to be an update to the engagement ring Prince Harry designed for her.

Punters noticed the Duchess of Sussex ‘s new ring at the Trooping the Colours parade, but Town & Country magazine note she was wearing it at the ‘reveal’ of baby Archie too.

The original ring has a thick yellow gold band, while the band Markle wore during the parade, along with what looks like a new eternity band, had a thin micro pavé diamond design.

The ring still features a centre stone from Botswana (the couple famously had their third date camping under the stars there, which is, it must be said, a significant upgrade on dinner and a movie) and two stones from Princess Diana’s collection. In a post-engagement interview with the BBC, she said of the ring,“It’s beautiful. And he [Prince Harry] designed it – it’s incredible.”
